School Choice and Supplemental Services
Overview
of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
(Provide by the Indiana
Department of Education)
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) designations for Indiana
school corporations and schools are determined by student performance and
participation rates on the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational
Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) assessments in English/language arts and mathematics;
student attendance rates (for elementary and middle schools); and graduation
rates (for high schools).
Since 2002, the federal No Child Left Behind
Act of 2001 (NCLB) has required public schools to make AYP for both the
overall student population and any demographic group within the school that
includes 30 or more students (often called “subgroups”). These student
subgroups include: economic background, race/ethnicity, limited English
proficiency and special education.
Schools must make AYP in every student group in order to
meet AYP. The goal of NCLB is for all students to achieve proficiency in
English/language arts and math by 2014.

This year Rushville Elementary School (RES) missed AYP specifically for the subgroup of students on Free & Reduced Lunch who took the Mathematics ISTEP+ in the Fall of 2008. This was the third year that RES missed in one or more subgroups, which places them in School Improvement Year Two. For this reason, RES will be offering School Choice and Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for the 2009-2010 school year.

SCHOOL CHOICE
Parents of RES students for the 2009-2010 school year may request that their child(ren) attend another elementary school within the Rush County Schools. Letters are being mailed to all parents of RES students. For a copy of the letter, please click the link below.
Details on school choice are available in the letter. Parents can also call RES Principal, Dr.

SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
(SES)
A second component of School Improvement will be the opportunity for RES students to take advantage of special tutoring known as Supplemental Educational Services (SES). SES means that a vendor known as a supplemental service provider will provide tutoring to qualifying students. To be considered a qualifying student, the student must be eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and must have failed state and/or local assessments.
We have determined those students eligible. Information packets were sent home with eligible students on October 12, 2009. If you are interested in Supplemental Educational Services and you think your child might be eligible, please talk with your child about whether they received a packet or call Danielle Flowers at RES, 932-2961. Enrollment forms are due at RES by October 30, 2009.
Currently 266 students are eligible and have received packets.
